Stop doing the wrong thing

"When you stop doing the wrong thing, the right thing does itself." F.M. Alexander

Search the Google for Frederick Matthias Alexander and you will find a link to his  Wikipedia entry. The first paragraph says he “was an Australian actor and author who developed the Alexander Technique, an educational process that recognizes and overcomes reactive, habitual limitations in movement and thinking. What Wikipedia does not say is that Alexander was definitely Sixtyone.

Sixtyone’s goal is change. We want people to change the way they think about golf. Alexander said that “Change involves carrying out an activity against the habit of life.” He said that “When people are wrong, the thing that is right is bound to be wrong to them.” He also said that “You can’t do something you don’t know, if you keep on doing what you know,” and that “When we stop doing the wrong thing, the right thing does itself.”

Does that sound familiar?

Being Sixtyone, becoming a complete and independent golfer, is similar to learning the Alexander Technique. If we simply stop doing the things we have been doing wrong, we will be halfway closer to our goals. As Alexander said; “It’s not having it that matters, but it’s knowing how to get from where you are now to something a bit better.”

Golf is hard. Being a complete and independent Sixtyone golfer is harder. But getting there is not complicated. In order to get a little better each day, we just need to do the wrong things less. Or as Alexander said; “People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures.”

What are your habits?
