Oct 23-22: Fun from physical and mental fitness

Objective

The word for the week is fitness; fit, sound, free from injury or disease. It is time to get the golfers to start thinking about their fitness.

It seems like more SBCUSD students opt out of PE than opt in. When visiting school campuses during PE classes, you will see many students walking around the field or gym in their street clothes. They don’t want to participate in the day’s activities, but the law says that they have to do something. So, they just walk.

Our goal is to get the golfers to understand the importance of fitness. We can start with simple stretching and golf specific exercises. Hopefully, over time, we can sprinkle in more serious activities.

Dominic has exercise routines. Heaven created a six week plan to get the students moving. Surely, there are other options. The bottom line is that it’s time to get the golfers moving.

Notes & Activities

  1. We have two early sessions this week on Wednesday:
    • @11:15 a.m. Indian Springs High School.
    • @1:00 p.m. Savant Prep.
    • We need to make sure that we have clubs, setup gear (E-Z Up), prizes & giveaways squared away so we’re ready to go.
  2. Halloween party: This Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Tom Minor Park.
    • This is not a come-one-come-all event. But, we should be encouraging active, on-campus student golfers to participate.
    • RSVP if you plan to participate.
  3. Rosters
    • We should complete a roster list of the consistent students at each school.
    • We need their shirt and pants sizes.
    • Explain to the students that they need to register to play.
    • Direct them to the HQ page to create a profile (https://61golf.com/hq/).
  4. Site assessments
    • We should have all sites updated with appropriate info (e.g. site leaders names & email addresses.
    • Emails for other staff members if appropriate.
    • CBO name and other contact info (e.g. CBO QAC name, school site liaison name).
  5. Swing basics.
    • Alignment stick drill. Pick up 8 alignment sticks from the Home Depot or Lowe’s. Have the students (SAFELY) try to make the thing whistle.
    • Learn to compress the ball. Stop whiffs, tops, thin, fat and chunks. Hit solid shots.
    • Everyone should know the swing sequence (Start behind the ball, target, grip, setup, on balance, finish facing the target).
    • Students should be focusing on solid contact.
    • Go over the meanings of whiff, topped, thin, solid and fat shots. If you don’t know what those mean, ask someone.
    • The ball gets in the way of a good swing.
    • Students need to learn to swing the club, not hit at the ball.
    • Short shots: Learn to play from the hole backwards.
    • Make good contact.
    • Sweep the grass under the ball.
    • Hit the ground in front.
    • Here’s a great drill to help hit the ball first (https://youtu.be/N1Yd_CXkdi4?si=YtVMDUP4yc0xyD5S).
    • You don’t have to swing hard.
    • Long shots are the same as short shots with a longer swing.
