Nov 06-12: Strategy

Objective

The word for the week is determination, firm or fixed intention to achieve a desired end. Golf requires firm and fixed intentions in order to play well. It is difficult to willy-nilly your way to playing golf well.

At Sixtyone, we do not do all lot of things, but what we do we do well. We do a few things with firm and fixed intentions. As an example, we can use a simple tool like a yardstick to help improve our putting. Whether we use it to control the putter face (like the above video) or use it like in this video to control distance, anyone can learn to be a better putter.

Notes & Activities

  1. Going forward, strategy week will be accompanied by a specific practice drill. We have to get better at helping the students get better at playing golf. You do not have to use the proposed drill. However, you do have to propose something. And, remember this! We do not do a lot of things, but what we do, we do well. We do not have to overwhelm the students with drill and concepts. Keep things simple.
  2. We have one early session this week on Wednesday:
    • @1:00 p.m. Savant Prep.
    • We need to make sure that we have smaller clubs and designate who is attending the session.
  3. Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. is our Golf Talks session.
  4. On Friday (the 10th) at 10:30 a.m. we will meet in the main chat room for a weekly planning meeting. Everyone should come prepared to participate.
  5. Swing basics.
    • Alignment stick drill. Pick up 8 alignment sticks from the Home Depot or Lowe’s. Have the students (SAFELY) try to make the thing whistle.
    • Learn to compress the ball. Stop whiffs, tops, thin, fat and chunks. Hit solid shots.
    • Everyone should know the swing sequence (Start behind the ball, target, grip, setup, on balance, finish facing the target).
    • Students should be focusing on solid contact.
    • Go over the meanings of whiff, topped, thin, solid and fat shots. If you don’t know what those mean, ask someone.
    • The ball gets in the way of a good swing.
    • Students need to learn to swing the club, not hit at the ball.
    • Short shots: Learn to play from the hole backwards.
    • Make good contact.
    • Sweep the grass under the ball.
    • Hit the ground in front.
    • Here’s a great drill to help hit the ball first (https://youtu.be/N1Yd_CXkdi4?si=YtVMDUP4yc0xyD5S).
    • You don’t have to swing hard.
    • Long shots are the same as short shots with a longer swing.
