ICTM: SBCUSD Introduction to Sixtyone

This is introduction week for SBCUSD Expanded Learning students. We're talking Sixtyone culture and the importance of strategy.

Objective

The 2022-23 SBCUSD golf program is off to a good start already. The orientation was a hit. It was a bit sloppy on our part, but it was a hit with the new parents and existing students.

This is the second full week of the month. The weekly theme is strategy. A goal without a plan is just a wish. A plan without out action is also a dream.

The goals for this week are:

  • Get the kids out on the grass and hitting the golf ball safely.
  • Start them off understand what golf is, why it is special and how at Sixtyone we learn to play from the hole backwards.
  • We also stay safe. Rule #1: Never be close enough to get hit. Rule #2: Check your surroundings.
  • This is our strategy.
  • The tactics we use all revolve around doing the difficult things while they are still easy, and we do the great big things while they are small.
  • Learning the golf swing is difficult. It’s even more difficult if your start off swinging for the fences. That’s not Sixtyone.
  • Start the students on the small shots.
  • Use golf terms. Keep your head on a swivel and make sure that the kids are safe, they’re learning about golf and they’re having fun.

Activities

We don’t do a lot of things, but what we do we do well. The first several sessions will focus on:

  • Acclimating the students to the routine: 1) sign into CAPS and get out on the field, 2) brief conversation about the day’s goals and activities, 3) setting up the hitting stations and targets.
  • Safety rules #1 Don’t be close enough to get hit, and #2 Check your surroundings.
  • Understanding the importance of the short game.
  • Grip, alignment and posture.
  • Controlling distance and direction.
  • Working on having fun. Golf is hard, especially when we start. We have to work on making sure we have fun even through the sucking period.
