Road trip 2023: Genesis Invitational

People like us do things like this.

Saturday afternoon at The Riv

This is strategy week. We’re heading to Riviera CC to watch the PGA pros play in the 2023 Genesis Invitational. It’s going to be fun. Tiger’s in the field this week. We all hope he continues to play well and makes the cut so we can see him on Saturday. There are also many other top professionals. Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are the top three golfers in the world and they’re playing. Here is the entire list. Check and see if your favorite is in the field.

Strategies are plans to reach goals. The main goal tomorrow is to have fun and see as much as we can. Here are some Sixtyone Road Trip strategies and tactics we will use:

BEFORE WE GO

  • Get rolling early. Meet up with the caravan at 8:30 a.m. at Shandin Hills GC. The group will hit the road by 9:00 a.m.
  • Gather in Santa Monica by 10:00 a.m. We will meet up at the parking lot on the northwest corner of 2nd St and Santa Monica Blvd.
  • We will march up the Third Street Promenade to the tournament shuttles that leave from 3rd St and Wilshire Blvd.
  • Make sure you have comfortable shoes. Also, please have layers of clothing. The weather can change drastically.
  • Check the the guest guidelines on the tournament website to make sure you know before you go what is permitted and what to avoid.

AT THE TOURNAMENT

  • Mute your phone.
  • Use this map to get familiar with the course layout.
  • We will rendezvous various times throughout the day at the Genesis Lounge at the 14th hole and at the Fan Grandstands at hole #10. Please make sure that you know how to find them.
  • Find a nice spot to sit and watch the tournament go by or pick a group and follow them. You could also do a little of both.
  • Encourage you children to investigate and learn. Here are a few things they should look for:
    • Which golfer (by name) has their favorite swing? What do they like about it?
    • Which hole (by number) is their favorite? How long was it? Why did they like it?
    • Ask why #10 at Riviera is considered an iconic hole on the PGA Tour.
    • Encourage them to find out how long the course is playing so they can compare it to Shandin Hill GC.
    • Who built Riviera’s course?
    • How many different jobs can they find at the course? Which one would they like to do most? What do they think it would take for them to get there?
    • From the #9 tee box, take a long look up the fairway towards the clubhouse. It is a special view.

REPRESENT BEING SIXTYONE

Remember, each one of us is representing all of us. We all represent the school district, Shandin Hills GC, each family in the program and all others from the entire area. People like us do things like this. When someone ask What is Sixtyone? Tell them a way to change the way you think about golf. Then show them how we roll:

  • Leave the golf course better than we found it.
  • Be respectful.
  • Be honorable.
  • Be helpful.
  • Separate the purpose (have fun) from the goal (be our best).

Change your perspective.

Think about what you can do.

Golf. Play more golf!
